When you keep in shape by exercising regularly and making healthy eating choices, it's frustrating to have persistent fat bulges. They have cute nicknames, such as love handles and muffin tops, but there's nothing appealing about them. CoolSculpting, available at our Midvale, Utah, practice, is a non-invasive procedure that tones trouble spots by freezing fat cells. Sound too good to be true? It's not.
Dr. Reuben and our team can help you get the sleek, toned contours you've worked so hard for.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian C. Reuben and our team of highly trained technicians can answer your questions about CoolSculpting. If you live in Draper, Sandy, Murray, South or West Jordan, or surrounding areas, request a consultation online or call our office at (801) 747-2273. What Is CoolSculpting?
The science behind CoolSculpting is based on the fact that fat cells are more vulnerable to low temperatures than skin or other surrounding tissues. The CoolSculpting system's exclusive cooling process, called Cryolipolysis®, is non-invasive and doesn't require any downtime following treatment. The system was developed by Harvard researchers who studied what happens to fat cells when they are exposed to low temperatures under carefully controlled conditions.
After a CoolSculpting procedure, which applies intense cold to the area you want to target from outside the skin, fat cells gradually break down and die. In the months following the treatment, lipids from the fat cells are released and processed naturally by the body's lymphatic system, much like fat from food. As the fat is carried away, treated areas slim down.
CoolSculpting is cleared by the FDA for non-surgical fat reduction.
CoolSculpting is one of the most popular and effective non-surgical methods of fat reduction available. Men and women looking for a non-invasive alternative to liposuction come to our Midvale practice for CoolSculpting treatments. Patients who get the best results:
- Are in good overall physical condition, but have some stubborn fat bulges
- Want to reduce fat in specific areas, such as the abdomen or inner and outer thighs
- Maintain a relatively stable weight
CoolSculpting isn't a weight-reduction procedure. It also won't help tighten lax skin.

At the consultation, one of our certified CoolSculpting technicians assesses the areas that concern the patient. Following a thorough physical exam and discussion of the patient's cosmetic goals, we may recommend CoolSculpting or another treatment to meet those goals.
On the day of the procedure, the technician attaches the appropriate CoolSculpting applicator to the targeted area. For spots where there is "pinchable" fat, such as the midsection or flanks, the skin is sucked between 2 specially designed plates that deliver cold energy under carefully controlled conditions. Flat cooling plates are used for areas such as the outer thighs, where it's common to have "non-pinchable" fat.

The procedure is quite comfortable, starting with a cold sensation that eventually turns numb. Most patients use their smartphones or tablets or read during the treatment. Others even close their eyes and rest.
What to Expect After Your CoolSculpting Treatment
Immediately after the CoolSculpting panels are removed, many patients notice the frozen fat tissue that's been drawn up between the panels looks like a stick of butter. That's not only normal, but a sign that there was good contact with the applicator.
Because the process of fat breaking down and dying is gradual, the results of the procedure take some time to appear. While patient experiences vary, it usually takes 3 to 4 months before the final results of the treatment become clear.
